The San Bernardino Pass is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps the pass is at an elevation of 2053m(6736ft). The route first became important as a mule track in the fifteenth century when the route between Thusis and Splügen was known as the Via Mala. A road for wheeled vehicles was opened in 1770; this road was significantly improved between 1821 and 1823, financed in part by the Kingdom of Sardinia.
On this pass remains of a Roman temple and cart tracks were found and illustrate its importance in Roman times. The road constructed in the 1820s to replace the old Septimer Pass was well built and is still easily passable after moderate widening for normal cars and trucks. In some parts, areas were rebuilt in 2009 to reduce the number of serpentine turns. The height of the pass is 2284m.
